Why Everyone Is Making Carmel-by-the-Sea Their Destination for September & October 2026
There's something about Carmel-by-the-Sea in September and October that just hits differently.
While most people expect the end of summer to mean cooler weather, shorter days, and fewer reasons to visit, Carmel has a little secret: September and October are some of our best months of the year.
The crowds start to quiet down, the weather stays beautiful, and those famous Carmel sunsets? Well, they speak for themselves.
Here are a few reasons why everyone is making Carmel their fall destination.
You might expect Carmel to get chilly as summer comes to an end, but September and October can actually bring some of our most beautiful weather.
The town feels a little quieter, the days are still perfect for exploring, and the evenings are made for watching the sunset.
And if you want to make the most of those sunsets, Rooms 120 and 121 at the Horizon Inn are our premier ocean-view rooms. Settle in, relax, and enjoy a front-row seat to one of Carmel's best daily shows.
We know the current wildfire situation can make travel plans feel uncertain, and we're incredibly grateful for the first responders working hard to keep our communities safe.
As of September 3, 2026, at 8:45 a.m., Highway 1 toward Big Sur is currently closed for emergency response. However, Point Lobos and surrounding Carmel-area attractions remain accessible at this time.
Conditions can change quickly, so please check local and official updates before heading out.
And as always, our hearts are with the communities and first responders dealing with these difficult circumstances.
If you're a wine person, we have something you're going to like.
For our complimentary Guest Wine & Cheese Happy Hour, we're currently featuring Folktale Wine, including selections like Joseph's Blend, Rosé, and Albariño, just to name a few.
Enjoy a glass, grab some cheese, and wind down after a day of exploring Carmel.
And if you can't get enough Folktale, the winery is just a short drive away. Consider that your sign to make a little wine-country detour.
Your Highness, the Horizon Inn has new TVs.
After spending the day walking through Carmel, exploring the coast, shopping, eating, and taking approximately 400 sunset photos, sometimes you just want to crawl into bed and watch your favorite show.
Catch up on Bridgerton, start that series you've been putting off, or simply stay in bed all day.
We don't care. You're on vacation.
Please note: New TVs are available at the Horizon Inn only and are not included at Ocean View Lodge or the Annex.
Maybe the best reason to visit Carmel in September and October is that you get to experience the town at a slightly slower pace.
Walk the streets without rushing. Stop into a gallery. Grab a glass of wine. Take the scenic route. Wander down to the beach just because you can.
Carmel-by-the-Sea has always been a place where you're encouraged to slow down, and fall makes that even easier.
The summer rush is fading, the weather is still inviting, and there's plenty left to discover.
So if Carmel has been sitting on your travel list, September and October 2026 might be the time to finally make the trip.
And when you do, come stay with us at the Horizon Inn. We'll have the wine, the breakfast, the parking, and hopefully a pretty spectacular sunset waiting for you.
See you in Carmel.
