Local Innkeepers Meeting

November Notes from the Inside

Read to the end for a secret phrase that gets you a complimentary surprise during your next stay.

November rolls in with the usual suspects: falling leaves, cooler evenings, and that quiet shift in the air that tells you the year is winding down. Guests may not have it on their radar, but those of us working in inns do — it's time for the annual Innkeepers Dinner. A night where owners, operators, and long-time locals gather to talk shop, swap stories, and reconnect with the people who keep Carmel's hospitality world running.

Representing Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge were Pam and Jim Sheppard, catching up with familiar faces, along with myself — Rudy, Head of Social Media — and Brenda, our longtime Front Desk lead and resident expert on all things Carmel lodging. These gatherings bring together the newcomers and the veterans. Everyone mingles, shares updates, and talks about what's happening at their properties and what's on the horizon for the community.

Meetings like this matter. They remind us what guests are looking for and how we can adapt, improve, and evolve. They help us understand how to reach our audience, how to stay relevant, and how to make sure anyone visiting Carmel leaves feeling welcomed and understood. This town works because its inns support one another — property by property, team by team.

This Year's Venue: The Newly Renovated Hog's Breath
This Year's Venue: The Newly Renovated Hog's Breath

This year's event was hosted at the newly renovated Hog's Breath, and it deserves special recognition. The redesign is impressive — warm, unique, and thoughtfully executed. It's the kind of space that feels immediately right for a gathering of innkeepers who spend each day thinking about atmosphere, comfort, and hospitality.

If you had been a fly on the wall, you'd notice something quickly: we're just like the guests we serve. We travel, we celebrate, and we look for a sense of home wherever we go. So when you stay with us — especially during the holiday season — know that we understand the weight of every detail and the importance of every moment.

For those who read this far, here is the promised bonus:

Mention "HORIZON BUBBLES" in your reservation notes or over the phone, and we will place a complimentary bottle of champagne in your room. Our thank you for taking the time to follow along.

The evening also offered a chance to connect with some of the key leaders who help shape Carmel-by-the-Sea. Mayor Dale Byrne attended, easily recognized by his distinct hat and warm, easygoing presence. We also had the pleasure of speaking with our police chief, Drake Sterling — sharp, welcoming, and a reminder that this town values genuine connection between local businesses and the community.

Dinner: Research or Treat?

Dinner was a highlight of the evening. Innkeepers like to say we sample the local dining scene so we know where to send our guests — and while that is true, we won't deny that the exceptional food is a perk. Thanks to Pam's strategic seat-saving efforts, we found ourselves in prime spots near the fire. Seafood, steak, and short ribs all made a memorable appearance.

Our Home, Your Home

For many of us working in hospitality, Carmel-by-the-Sea is more than a workplace — it is home. We care deeply about this community, and we want every guest to feel the same comfort, warmth, and welcome that we experience here daily.

Next time you are in town, visit Hog's Breath. Tell them the team at Horizon sent you. And if you remember the secret phrase, the bubbles will be waiting.
